Commenting on the Center’s dropped proposal of bringing Real estate under GST, the Taxation Minister of Meghalaya, Zenith Sangma stated that the middle class and the lower middle class would be affected if the real estate sector comes under Goods and Services Tax.
The minister was speaking after the Central decided to drop its ‘Real estate under GST’ plan as several states were opposing it.
Speaking about the effects, Zenith said, “The Centre had proposed to bring real estate under GST, which the states vehemently opposed, and thus the proposal was dropped. If it had happened, the pressure would have come on the middle class and the lower middle-class people as the burden would have been shifted to purchasers. Moreover, this will not go well in the land tenure system in the Sixth Schedule states like us.”
The next burning topic for the GST Council is the cross empowerment which is set for January 3-4 to debate on. A Few north-east states including Meghalaya had disagreed over certain regulations decided in GST council meet.
