Income Tax Department has said that for AY 2026-27, more than 7.8 crore ITRs have been submitted till August 31.
More than 7.3 crore ITRs were submitted by September 16, 2025, in the previous year, for the extended due date for return filing concerning non-audit cases for AY 2025-26,
“A record 7.8 crore+ ITRs have been filed for AY 2026-27 as on August 31, 2026,” the I-T department stated.
It also has more than 5.9 crore ITR-1s and ITR-2s submitted by the July 31 deadline.
The last date for filing ITRs for AY 2026-27 is August 31, 2026, for taxpayers with business or professional income who are not required to undergo audit.
If a taxpayer is in the non-audit category, then he or she can submit the applicable ITR (ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5 or ITR-7).
Individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) file ITR-3 for income from a proprietary business or profession.
ITR-4 is a simplified income tax return form designed for eligible small and medium taxpayers.
Limited Liability Partnerships and Cooperative Societies submit ITR-5. Companies registered under the Companies Act submit ITR-7, and trusts and charitable institutions submit ITR-6 submits the ITR-6.
