Income Tax Return (ITR) filing is mandatory for all Indian nationals whose annual earnings are over Rs 2,50,000/- in a Financial Year. The criteria are revised from time to time for accurate listing and record maintenance. In a recent announcement, the government has made it compulsory for taxpayers to link their Aadhaar cards at the time of ITR filing, the aim behind which is to increase the authenticity of tax returns and improve the collection of taxes. Before that, only a PAN card was needed as Identity Proof for the filing of income tax returns.
The income tax department issued a reminder to link their PAN with Aadhaar by 31st May 2024 if not linked yet. if the PAN – Aadhaar linking is not completed by 31st May 2024, then tax deduction/ collection (TDS/ TCS) at a higher rate under Sections 206AA and 206CC of the I-T Act, 1961.
Now that it has become mandatory to link your Aadhaar with the ITR, it is important to be aware of the various ID issues that might lead to the rejection of your ITR. If your Aadhaar has one or more errors, the chances are that the income tax department will ask you to provide the correct ID details or may even reject the return. So, what are there errors?
To start with, you need to make sure that you have a valid Aadhaar card issued by the Indian government to be eligible for IT return filing. According to the Income Tax Act, every taxpayer who is eligible for an Aadhaar must furnish their Aadhaar Number or Enrollment ID at the time of filing the ITR. It is also mandatory to link your Aadhaar with your PAN card.

if your Aadhaar card has been rejected for some reason, make sure to file a request for an Aadhaar card after correcting the errors.

If you fail to provide all the correct documents like PAN card, address proof, etc at the time of registering for an Aadhaar, it may result in an error or rejection. So, make sure these documents are correct and complete.
Misplaced/lost your Aadhaar?
You can now download an e-pdf or soft copy of your Aadhaar card from the UIDAI website. For this, you must have your Aadhaar enrollment ID as well as a registered phone number. The soft copy of the Aadhaar is equal in value to a hard copy.
Discrepancy Between Aadhaar and PAN
If there is a mismatch of data, such as name, gender and birth date, between your Aadhaar and PAN card, it also might lead to the rejection of your ITR. So, get it corrected ASAP before filing your annual income tax return.
