BJP Demands Abolishment of Octroi in Mumbai After GST

Goods and service tax in India is said to be very powerful taxation reform and will take over various indirect duties currently prevailing in the country. Just like that, Octroi, which is considered to be a major revenue source for the ports and city municipal earned by levying some imposition on the goods entering the city.

But as mentioned, the GST will subsume all the other indirect taxes and this means the Octroi will also the end of its operation. In the same direction, Bhartiya Janata party (BJP) in the working seat of Mumbai demands an abolition of Octroi on the ports once GST gets implemented.

A lot of noise has been created within the political corridors considering these two parties, Shiv Sena and BJP as the control and authority of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) is in the hands of Shiv Sena. As the authority is seen through the eyes of suspicion, this time BJP wants the transparency cover the doubts. In this issue, the BJP has also raised voice against the lack of transparency in the operations conducted by the Shiv Sena in the matter of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM).

As Octroi is the important source of revenue for the Shiv Sena and also holds some extra weight, this has persuaded the BJP to track down the details and other transactions related to the Octroi source of income for the Shiv Sena. Also, BJP demands a fixed allocated fund of INR 100 crore to facilitate the city transport service, BEST, to be included in the MCGM annual budget. As earlier, a lot of criticism was showered on the civic body to eradicate the AC bus service from the duty just on the behalf of lack of funds.

Bhartiya Janata party held a meeting where the official statement mentioned that “Octroi is being levied in Mumbai for a long time and it should be abolished immediately once GST comes into force. We also want most of the transactions of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to take place electronically to bring more transparency in its services and functioning.”
