The launch of a new Biometric Face Authentication feature through a mobile application has been announced by the Andhra Pradesh Commercial Taxes Department, in collaboration with the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), w.e.f January 1, 2025.
In a statement, Babu A., Chief Commissioner of State Tax, notified that this Biometric Face Authentication was objected at facilitating the process of verification preventing the fake taxpayers from entering the GST ecosystem at the registration phase, hence safeguarding the system from the misuse of the bogus Input tax credit.
Also, it proposes surged security against the misuse of the Aadhaar details and the making of bogus identity cards, protecting innocent people whose Aadhaar details may have been misused and assuring that merely true taxpayers were registered in the system.

At present, there are 12 GST Seva Kendras (GSKs) in Andhra Pradesh where biometric verification is performed via fingerprint or iris scanners. GSTN to improve the e convenience and accessibility has made a mobile application compatible with Android devices (phones or tablets).
The same new application shall allow the Biometric Authentication Officers (BAOs) at GSKs to perform the verification process without the requirement for any hardware devices.

It permits the BAOs to log in, enter the Aadhaar details, and capture the applicant’s photo for face authentication and verification in a single step, he mentioned.
The commissioner cited that via the use of the updated functionality, biometric verification shall be completed in two steps instead of the previous three steps.
- The first step is photo capture and face authentication: the applicant’s biometric details are verified via facial recognition.
- In the second step, document verification: verification of the applicant’s documents is performed.
