Twitter Explodes Through 1 Million GST Tweets

Newly launched Goods and Services Tax (GST) Regime is one of the hottest topics for conversations in social media. Within two days of launch, Twitter received nearly 1 million conversations which indicates the sentiments of people towards the nation and the biggest tax reform.

From #GSTIndia to #GSTForCommonMan, people choose Twitter as social media to show their feelings, sentiments, thoughts and conversations about the new indirect taxation structure.

India entered into new Goods and Services Tax (GST) Regime on the midnight of 30th June and 1st July. A four- tier tax slab rates 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% have been decided by GST the Council.

People have been using social media platforms for posting the receipts issued in groceries, eateries, restaurants for showing the new tax deductions as GST rather than VAT/ Service Tax.

Twitter India Head of Public Policy and Government Mahima Kaul said in a statement “Conversations around the launch of the GST exemplify Twitter as the best place for people to connect with what’s happening in India and around the world and express their opinions”.” Kaul further added that “With more than a million tweets on GST, we hope the public feedback will help to facilitate greater citizen engagement on the topic”.”

Conversation on Twitter started at 12:30 AM on 1st July with 1,100 tweets per minute. The frequently hashtags used on the Twitter- GSTIndia, GSTCouncil, GSTRate, GST, GSTsimplified, GST@GoI, IndiaforGST, HalfCookedGST and HalfBakedGST, GSTForCommonMan and askGST for conversations.
