Business Opportunities for Logistic IT Startups Under GST E Way Bill

Logistic IT Startups Under E Way Bill

There are a lot of business opportunities for logistics startups in the GST e-way bill-based setup. As everyone knows that the first launch of the E-way bill was not a smooth one.

The Indian government has made new changes to the GST e-way bill system in 2025. These updates aim to make the system more secure, faster, and compliant, but they also create new opportunities for IT startups in the logistics sector.

The eWay bill will help in tracking interstate movement of goods to ensure a transparent transport system free of tax evasion, as well as curb unauthorised delivery of goods.  However, the e-way bill platform developed, deployed and implemented by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) is ideal for small firms and handling large volumes of requests for bill generation.  But it caters little to the needs and demands of the larger logistic enterprises.

It lacks specialised features that can further increase process efficiency. This is where the start-ups come in. Logistic Solutions-based IT startups are offering customised solutions for a wide category of enterprise customers.

Key Changes in the E-Way Bill System

Mandatory Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

  • From April 1, 2025, MFA is compulsory for all GST portal users.
  • Companies now need secure login systems that can work easily across different departments.
  • This opens up opportunities for startups to build software that helps manage secure logins smoothly.

Restricted Timelines for Generation and Extension

  • From January 1, 2025, e-way bills can be generated only for documents issued within the last 180 days.
  • Bills can be extended for a maximum of 360 days from the original generation date.
  • This means businesses must track expiry dates carefully, creating a need for automated alert and tracking tools.

Expanded 30-Day E-Invoice Reporting

  • Now, all businesses with an annual turnover above ₹10 crore must report e-invoices within 30 days.
  • Startups can develop combined platforms that handle both e-invoicing and e-way bill generation in one place.

Second E-Way Bill Portal Launched

  • A new portal, ewaybill2.gst.gov.in, started on July 1, 2025, to handle heavy traffic and reduce downtime.
  • Startups can create software that syncs data between the two portals automatically.

Integration with GPS-Based Toll Systems

  • Soon, the e-way bill system will connect with GPS toll systems.
  • This will need advanced fleet management software that links vehicle movement with e-way bill and toll data.

Opportunities for IT Startups in Logistics

These changes open the door for startups to provide smart, easy-to-use, and efficient digital solutions that go beyond the basic government portal.

Compliance and Management Solutions

  • Automation Platforms: Software that automatically creates and manages e-way bills, checks data, and reduces manual errors
  • Integrated Systems: Platforms that combine e-invoicing and e-way bill generation for smoother operations
  • Compliance Alerts: Tools that send real-time alerts when a bill is about to expire or when there’s a mismatch in data

Advanced Logistics and Supply Chain Services

  • Real-Time Tracking: Apps using APIs, GPS, or RFID to show live tracking of goods in transit.
  • Logistics Optimisation: Software that uses e-way bill data to plan better routes, manage vehicle loads, and cut costs.
  • Data Analytics & Reports: Dashboards showing reports on delivery times, costs, and performance, helping companies make better decisions.

The prime focus of these platforms is on two things:

  • Customised platforms for users as per their needs for bill generation.
  • Force Scale Adoption by consignors and transporters across geographies.

These platforms provide  noteworthy features like

  1. Seamlessly handle voluminous transactions in Real Time.
  2. Auto calculation of distance and reduction in the turnout time.
  3. Generation of e-way bills valid across the length and breadth of the country from a single location.
  4. Immediate alerts on any changes made to the eWay bill provisions.

Logistics and tax filing startups stand to gain tremendously from the e-waybill. The figures further cement this fact.

Solutions for Different Business Segments

Large Enterprises: Custom-built platforms that handle high volumes of data and complex compliance needs (e.g., in pharma, FMCG).
SMEs: Simple, mobile-friendly apps that make e-way bill generation and compliance easy for small businesses.
E-Commerce Companies: Software that automatically generates e-way bills during order fulfilment, improving delivery speed and compliance.

In Short: The 2025 e-way bill changes have created a big opportunity for IT startups. Businesses now need smart, secure, and automated tools for compliance, tracking, and logistics — areas where startups can play a major role.

A Business Head from a tax filing company stated that “We are seeing a lot of interest from large enterprises and have about 100 of them registered on the platform, although we expect more conversions from (small and medium enterprises)”. He further added that the company hopes to witness a ten-fold increment in requests for bill generation.

Another Business Head from an app-based company stated: “Our app-based platform gives their clients the flexibility of generating e-waybills from anywhere”. He also added that distribution-driven heavy sectors like consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, and handling the tremendous volume of invoices daily are benefitting immensely from their customised solutions and services.

These are the heydays for startups in the logistics and IT industry. A great opportunity for revenue generation and product extension. The prime factors that would govern market dominance and facilitate the generation of a loyal customer base are most probably: Price Competitiveness and High-Quality value-added features.
