First Meeting of GST Review Committee Went Inconclusive

GST Review Panel

The first meeting of the GST review committee, exclusively formed for making the Goods and Services Tax (GST) recovery more effective, went inconclusive on Tuesday. The new meeting is proposed to be held in the next week.

In the last meeting which was held on Tuesday, the committee reviewed the current situation of GST and discussed the ways to increase the GST collection.

In this day-long meeting, discussions were held to increase GST income from 10 states including Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil Nadu. Throughout the discussion, the emphasis was on finding the modus operandi of GST theft and suggestions for dealing with it. The issues which were discussed in the meeting with the Chief Secretary level officers in the Prime Minister’s office last week were also taken up in this meeting.

In the discussion, which was held in the Prime Minister’s Office, monitoring was suggested at the central and state level to increase revenue. In the meeting, the government was also informed about the methods of stealing Input Tax Credit, received by GST Intelligence, and also said that the GST department of both the state and the Center needs to be vigilant against such GST evaders.

The officials of the new committee have been insisted on creating a strong centralized system with which alerts can be simultaneously sent for the state as well as central level fake invoice defaulters, fake claimants and input tax credits defalcator so that these GST defaulters would not be able to do the same in another state.

Apart from this, discussion about the preparation of a data analytics system at the state level and the sharp decline in GST return filing, especially in Chhattisgarh and North-East states of the country, was also held in the meeting.

All the officials will come prepared with their input in the meeting to be held next week. GSTN officials will also attend the meeting so that they can give their opinion on the feasibility of any technical changes in the current system.
