Due to the misconduct and non-cooperative behaviour of PV Rao when the DGGSTI (Director General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence) and also no reason of being unfit to travel to Delhi, the court has given direction to appear personally and rejected the video conferencing option.
DGGSTI had raided Byju’s offices in Bangalore from 27 October till 30th October 2020 for the purpose of unearthing some of the tax evasion material they have missed declaring them as an exempt category. Earlier the PV Rao was asked to visit the DG office multiple times in order to record the statement but he denied every time however this has been asked strictly to come in person and record the statement.
The DGGSTI lawyer has said that the evidence and documents must be available on the spot and must not be tampered and all the clarifications are required to be from PV Roa and this cannot be conducted on a virtual conference.
As per the Byju’s official statement on all this issue, “There is no summon issued to us by the High Court. The writ petition was filed by the company requesting video conferencing participation instead of physical presence for a routine GST meeting Get to know about GST (Goods and Services Tax) council 1st to 42th meeting updates and decisions taken by members. We have covered 1st meeting to last meeting decisions in light of the ongoing Covid pandemic.”
