Assessees Express Frustration on Social Media Over Delays in ITR Refunds

Taxpayers' Frustration on Social Media Over Delay in ITR Refund Process

For significant delays in the processing of ITR and subsequent issuance of refunds, taxpayers on the social media platform X are raising their voices.

Public grievance has arrived because people who submitted their ITRs several months ago witnessed that their processing status remained unchanged or their refunds were stuck in the pending phase. Taxpayers are sharing screenshots and quoting long wait times for income tax return (ITR) processing and refund.

Even after the successful e-verification of taxpayers’ ITRs, users report that the process can take up to three months or more. Taxpayers stated that this status had not changed, despite raising grievances on the portal.

The “Refund Not Issued” status has also been highlighted in the complaint of the taxpayers, even after the ITR has been officially processed and the demand for a refund confirmed. They shared their acknowledgement number, requesting quick action.

The financial inconvenience caused by the delay has been expressed by many users, particularly those who depend on the refund amount for planned expenditures or settling dues. ITRs had not been processed for a duration of 3 to 4 months, various taxpayers complained.

One of the taxpayers showed his frustration that every family member in his family received ITR refunds, but his ITR was not even processed. Likewise, a taxpayer cited in X that only a few Indians were filing taxes, but even that was not processed and refunded by the department.

But the complaints rise successively, the income tax department has been answering queries, issuing standard advisories. Such advisories comprise writing an email with the PAN number and other details etc.

The department wants to reassure taxpayers that they are making efforts to clear the backlog and has urged them to validate their bank account details and check for frequent updates for the refund process.

The majority of the users complained that no progress was made, even after filing grievances and writing emails to the Income Tax department. The department again answered with generic responses, for which specific taxpayers show their frustration.

Many taxpayers find these generic responses inadequate, increasing the need for immediate action and a clearer, more predictable processing timeline.
