ITR Filing Gains Momentum as Over 1.7 Cr Returns Are Filed Ahead of July 31 Deadline

ITR Filings for AY 2026–27 Surpass 1.7 Crore Till July 11, 2026

As the July 31 deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) approaches, return filing activity has gained significant momentum across the country.

The Income Tax Department has announced that more than 1.7 crore taxpayers have already filed their ITRs for Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27, reflecting a strong response from taxpayers during the current filing season.

The department said that more than 10 lakh ITRs were submitted in a single day, which shows a sharp rise in compliance as the deadline is approaching.

Tax authorities have prompted eligible taxpayers to avoid last-minute filing and complete the procedure before the due date to ensure a seamless experience.

The reminder is especially for individuals needed to submit ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2, whose due date for AY 2026-27 remains 31 July 2026. Taxpayers must check their income details, tax credits, and deductions before filing their returns.

The income tax department has outlined that early filing assists taxpayers in preventing portal congestion, lowers the possibility of errors, and facilitates quicker processing of returns and refunds. Officials anticipate a rise in submissions in the final weeks of July, with the rapid rise in filing numbers.
