An initiative ‘name and shame’ was introduced by the Income Tax department, last year, which now witnessed a reform for this financial year. Under which from now the taxpayers of all category, who are defaulters of Rs one crore and above, their names will be published in the leading national dailies.
Earlier, under this exercise, people with huge defaults of about Rs 20-30 crore were included and till now approx 67 names have been disclosed with their complete details like PAN card number, addresses, contacts and shareholders in case of companies by the Income Tax department
As per a senior official, “It has been decided to ‘name and shame’ all category of taxpayers including personal and corporate taxpayers who have a default of Rs 1 crore and above by March, 31 which is the end of the 2016-17 financial year.
“The names will be published before July 31 next year”.
Recently, an order regarding this ‘name and shame’ measure has been issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which has also been accessed by PTI (Press Trust of India).
The officials said about this reformed ‘name and shame’ measure that the main target of this measure is to inform the public at large level about such tax evaders whom the taxman has not been able to put their hands on them besides, using various investigative and enforcement tools on them.
A list of such defaulters names and identities are also provided on the official web portal of the IT department.
