Taxpayers Request for Return Filing Date Extension

Taxpayers have requested the government to permit more time for filing the tax returns, invoices and payments of July month after the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Businesses, as well as traders, are struggling with the new tax regime. Some of the businesses firms have managed to file returns without any bugs, whereas, many of the firms have faced problems in two days previously deadline extended by the government to 25th August for filing taxes and returns of July month.

A known person with the development said on the condition of anonymity, By 2 PM on 25th August, 2.93 million taxpayers had submitted July returns at GSTN portal, with a private company which handles all GST processes such as filing, registrations and so on.

2.93 million is just a part of the total number of taxpayers who have sought for the GST registration. On 1st August, a total of 8 million taxpayers were enrolled in the previous regime (VAT), out of them 7.2 million taxpayers had migrated to the new indirect tax regime. Additionally, 1.3 million new registration have enrolled to the new tax regime

“Given the number of issues that businesses are still facing, it might be desirable to extend the deadline to file not only GSTR 3B but also other returns due in September,” said Pratik Jain, partner and leader of indirect tax practice, PwC India.

R. Muralidharan, Senior Director of Deloitte India, said, “Generally clients are able to file returns. Some of them initially had issues in their tax payments not getting reflected in time.”

On Thursday GSTN Chairman Navin Kumar, had requested businesses and taxpayers to file July month returns before the closure of the deadline, to avoid last minute rush and technical glitches. GSTN said, “Uploading of invoices is a simple process at the GST portal and should be completed early in order to avoid delays that are usually witnessed on the last day.”
