Tax evasion under the new GST TAX regime was never going to be easy. Going by the Governments strong stand it appears that the culprits would be unmasked sooner than later.
A total of 16 tax evasion cases have been found since GST regime was implemented in July last year. The total amount of tax evaded during a period of five months (July-November) is around Rs 5.70 crore. Further, the Government has also revealed that during April-December of 2017 -18 about 2,938 cases of tax evasion were discovered. The tax evasion amount for the same period was Rs 9,660 crore.
The Finance Ministry assured that stern steps would be taken by the tax department against those found purposely guilty. Tax evaders will be subject to seizure of bank accounts, no prior notice searches, income assessment, penalty as well as the filing of prosecution complaints before criminal courts.

In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Mr PP Chaudhary informed that the first nine months of the financial year logged 614 cases of central excise tax evasion amounting to Rs 7,242 crore as well as a total of 26,969 customs cases amounting to Rs 3,987 crore.
