Revenue Secretary Works Towards Increasing GST Collection

Hasmukh Adhia

As the GST collection is not as per the government prospect, revenue secretary Hasmukh Adhia is working towards ways to enhance the tax influx. A GST State Commissioner mentioned in a statement, “The revenue secretary is expected to review the overall collection trend and issues faced by the businesses if any. The focus, though, would be on compliance and enforcement.”

The revenue secretary has taken the reviews over the working of the tax administration of Jammu and Kashmir and is likely to review the Bihar as well to bring out a similar sort of exercise. As quoted by the officials, “The revenue secretary is likely to take review meetings in about 5-6 states. We have been getting hints for escalating the fight against evasion by conducting searches and seizures.”

In July, the GST collection reached Rs. 96,483 crore as compared to the GST collection of the June month which is Rs 95,610 crore. Although, it is still away from the expected collection of Rs. 1 lakh crore.

Whereas the central government has remained away from the monthly target of GST collection, the Revenue Secretary during the first-anniversary celebration of Goods and Services Tax had mentioned that the Rs 1 lakh crore revenue estimation was not a regulation but this is what the government planned to touch in term of GST collection.

In the starting phase of GST implementation, the government was focused on the smooth transition of the filing and collection, but now the focus has placed on enforcement. Both State and Central GST authorities have strictly arrested the alleged people in tax evasion.

In the last month, the Central GST Delhi West Commissionerate investigated two businessmen and arrested on fraudulent cases of input tax credit (ITC) invoices issuance without a real supply of goods information comprising tax evasion of approximately Rs. 201 crore. Further, in the favor of eliminating tax evasion, the tax authorities have taken businessmen and involved people in custody in some cities for issuing notional invoices.
