Punjab University Seeks Funds Needed For GST Chair

The Punjab University wants to establish a GST chair which will allow the department to enhance and develop skills needed for understanding the goods and services tax thoroughly. But for this, PU will need funds.

So in this matter, the department of economics of Punjab University has written to the Union Ministry of finance and if the funds are given then in the region, Punjab University will be the first to establish GST chair. In November 2018, in a meeting of the administrative and academic committee of University, the same matter was discussed.

As per the sources, the chair professor has not been decided yet. After the approval of the chairs, the agencies funding will have their own norms within the wide structure of a regulatory body such as UGC.

The department is planning to study the consequences of GST under the chair. The main aim of the chair is to research the effects on the state/central revenue of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The PU Department already has two chairs- Jawaharlal Nehru Chair whose chair professor is former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Dr Manmohan Singh Chair whose chair professor is a well-known economist, Prof. Yoginder K Alagh.

To get a GST chair in the department, the department chairperson requested the Vice-chancellor Prof Raj Kumar, as said by the department chairperson at the meeting. At that time, the Vice-chancellor asked the department to give the budget they need for establishing the chair. Still, they were waiting for the response of the Ministry, said the Department chairperson Prof Upinder Sawhney.
