PM Narendra Modi May Attend a Conference with Top IT Dept Officials Next Month

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to hold a conference with the top officials of the Income Tax Department of the country in the coming month. The agenda behind the meeting is the discussion on the issues ranging from ensuring the better taxpayer services to the effective enhancement in the tax base to strengthen the economy of the country.

Officials revealed, Mr. Modi along with the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley may attend a meeting with the Directors General and Principal Chief Commissioners of IT during their discussion conference and annual brainstorming in the capital city of India.

While the itinerary and the other minor details of the Modi two-day conference is still not finalized, and the anticipation is at the conference, Modi will be the keynote speaker to inaugurate the conference session and Mr. Jaitley could be the lead speaker who would talk to the IT and CBDT brass about the government’s plans of financial inclusion and ensuring a transparent tax arrangement for businesses and foreign investors in the country.

Tentatively, as per the officials, conference is likely to be held between June 14-17 and other official from the Finance Ministry also be present there to discuss issues with the top tax officials while conference.

Modi, in his recent review meetings with the policy- making body of the Tax Department — Central Board of Direct Taxes — has been reiterating the need to reduce taxpayers’ grievances and ensure a quick resolution of these issues.

Last year, the Prime Minister had announced a new performance appraisal system for the officers of the CBDT to ensure the better working by the Tax Department officials.

last year while addressing an economic event, Modi said, these changes which include an online assessment of scrutiny cases, carry “transformative potential” in ensuring better productivity from the Tax Department and reducing corruption and also motivate officers to pass correct orders.

Further the officials said, the conference will also focus on issues and latest challenges facing the department, including widening the tax net, ensuring enhanced revenue collections under the direct taxes category and bringing in new technology steps to ensure paperless environment in the department.
