Maharashtra and Karnataka Secure 1st and 2nd Positions in Direct Tax Collections

Maharashtra and Karnataka Achieve Top Two Positions in Direct Tax Collections

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the South are counted under the top 5 states in India that account for 70% of India’s total direct tax collections.

Maharashtra tops the list with 38.9%, accounting for a significant portion of tax collections, whereas Karnataka and Tamil Nadu rank second and fourth, respectively.

Following Gujarat, Delhi has arrived in third place as per the reports from SBI. According to the reports, Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu hold per capita tax contributions of more than the national average.

Rajasthan, Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh comprise lower per capita direct taxes and low per capita incomes. There is a distinction in the pecking order when it comes to filing income tax returns (ITR).

The top five states in ITR filings were Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu, in the assessment year (AY) 2024, which makes up 48% of total returns. Compared to AY 2015 there were 5.1 crore more ITRs furnished in AY 2024, with the highest rise in Maharashtra, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and TN.

Under the report the tax filers for the assessment year 2025 crossed 9 crore; The number was 6.89 crore in the assessment year 2022.

The total number of taxpayers increased 2.3 times to 8.62 crore in AY 2024 in the last 10 years.

The report credited the rise in ITR filings to the implementation of tax simplification initiatives.
