High GST Rate on Healthcare Insurance Seems Inappropriate: Activist to Modi

High GST Rate on Healthcare Insurance

MP activist Chandrashekhar Gaur is in action again with his question directed on the applicability of 18 per cent GST on the healthcare insurance seems to move within the political corridors as the letter has been sent to the prime minister Narendra Modi also.

Although there are 2.43 crore people who are registered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme for the insurance, also termed as the world’s largest healthcare scheme. But for the other private sector people there may be a question of the heavy premium and here the interest rate of 18 per cent comes to effect.

As per the clarification demanded, the letter stated that Health is every person’s basic right. With its Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the government has covered the vulnerable groups, which I understand is required. But what about the huge population that is middle class? Why are they forced to pay a whopping 18 per cent GST on healthcare insurance?”

He also added that “With inflation in medical treatments, mediclaims are the need of the hour.”

The letter directed towards the degrading services of the healthcare services in India and emphasized on the 18 per cent GST on the insurance services which is a hefty amount for most of the population.

One must note that healthcare insurance comes under the exemption benefit however it depends on the salary range. As there are tax exemptions on the medical claims under section 80c and 80D.
