GST Portal Introduces Multi-Factor Authentication Feature to Enhance Security

GST Multi-Factor Authentication to Prevent Unauthorized and Fraudulent Activities

On April 1, 2025, as the new financial year starts, influential amendments in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) compliance have come into force, steering in enhanced security measures via multi-factor authentication (MFA) on the GST portal. The motive of the same update is to strengthen the system against unauthorized access and fraudulent activities.

What About Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

A tax expert cited that MFA needs additional verification apart from the user ID and password, like a one-time password sent to the registered mobile number. It assures that only authorized personnel can access the GST portal, improving accountability and lessening the risk of misuse.

Security Concerns

The MFA importance has been specified in mitigating risks of unauthorized access. Earlier, there were cases where one could access important information or furnish returns without clear accountability. MFA addresses such concerns by adding a layer of security.

Effect on GST E-Way Bills

An updated norm for GST E-way bills (EWB) will restrict the generation of bills to base documents within 180 days. The same measures have the motive to ease compliance and prevent the misuse of EWBs.
