Changing GST Goals Questioned by Former Finance Minister

Changing GST Goals

The single standard rate of GST was proposed by the Congress party but has not been accepted by the BJP Government earlier. But it seems as if the electoral verdicts in the three states and the failure of BJP in these states in the last elections proved to be an eye-opener for the Government and thus Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passed a verdict that in the Country there would be a single standard rate of GST, except the luxury and “sin goods”.

Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram questioned the changing ‘declared Goals’ of the Government on Wednesday and asked that what was the reason behind the changing Goals and decision regarding the GST rates of the Government in Power.

He further added that the Single Standard rate has already been proposed by the Congress Party, which was declined and rejected earlier by the Ruling party declaring it as a stupid idea. Congress party’s proposal for an 18 percent cap was not acceptable by the Government at a point of time. But as of now, this has become ‘Goal of the Government’.

Former Finance Minister questioned the irresponsible behavior of the Government through a series of Tweets. He said that The Chief Economic advisor’s RNR report to get the GST rates fixed at 15 percent was not paid a least of attention but as evident from a Facebook post by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley the Standard GST rates could be fixed between 12 to 18 percent.

The former Minister’s tweet came just two days after the Finance Minister hinted for capping the rate of interest at a particular standard rate.

The disappointing election results from the three major Hindi speaking States seems to be an Alarm for the Government to gear up and take some wise decisions which could be proved to be profitable for the Country.
