Against the fraudster, the centre has alerted the citizens to issue a bogus and fraudulent summons for the breach of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has noted that certain people with the intent to fraud are making and sending bogus summons to taxpayers who may or may not be under investigation by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI).
“The fake summons resembles very closely with the original due to use of Department’s logo and Document Identification Number (DIN),” as per the CBIC mentioned in a statement.
Such DIN numbers are fake and have been used by fraudsters to make the document appear genuine.
“It is once again clarified that taxpayers can easily verify the genuineness of any communication (including Summons) issued by any officer of CBIC by using the ‘VERIFY CBIC-DIN’ window on the CBIC’s website,” Ministry of Finance cited.
Taxpayers, for suspicion and fake summons, may report to the DGGI/CGST formations.
If on validating the DIN (Document Identification Number) a person or a taxpayer discovers that the summon, letter, or notice is not true, it may be notified to the related office.
The same shall allow the competent DGGI/CGST formation to take law enforcement measures against the fraudsters for using bogus summons/letter/notice to dupe the public.
In the earlier year, the government launched a special drive by Central and state GST formations to determine and remove the bogus GST registration used for the bigger ITC (input tax credit) frauds.
In a coordinated way, the drive shall be performed between the Central and state formations. Based on specific identified risk parameters, nearly 59,000 potential fake firms were recognised for verification and additional enquiry.
