CBDT Gets a New Chairman Ravi Agrawal, Succeeding Nitin Gupta

CBDT Appoints Ravi Agrawal as New Chairman

In an influential administrative move, Ravi Agrawal, a 1988-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the supreme policy-making body for the Income Tax Department. Agrawal succeeds Nitin Gupta, a 1986-batch IRS officer, whose extended tenure concludes on June 30.

New Leadership at CBDT

Agrawal, currently serving as Member (Administration) on the Board, has been appointed to lead the CBDT until June 2025, as per an official order. However his scheduled retirement is in September of this year, and his appointment will be extended on a “reappointment on a contract basis” until June 30th of next year.

Role and Obligations

An important role has been played via the CBDT in formulating the income tax department policies. The chairman leads the same and could comprise 6 members who secure the rank of special secretary. As the new Chairman, Agrawal shall oversee distinct administrative and policy decisions that impact the function of the department.

Experience and Vision of Agrawal

As Agrawal carries an experience of 30 years as an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, his new role appointment draws wealth. It is anticipated to furnish a strategic direction and continuity to the initiatives of the CBDT with his appointment, assuring effective tax administration and compliance.

Closure

A new chapter in the board’s leadership will be marked with the appointment of Ravi Agrawal as the new chairman of CBDT. The transition is expected to be streamlined as he takes over from Nitin Gupta, holding the momentum in the running projects and reforms of the department.
