People are wondering whether the due date of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and Tax Audit Reports (TAR) for September 15 will be extended by the government.
CAs and professionals appealed to the Income Tax Department to permit the extension of the deadline during the peak of the filing season, to have precise and error-free compliance.
Chartered accountants (CAs) are encountering issues of overwhelming workloads, tight deadlines, delayed utilities, system lags, and conflicting compliance requirements.
Tax experts said that it is important to mark the issues tax professionals are encountering in filing ITR 2025 and why they require an additional due date extension.
The ITR and tax audit due date extension is needed as per the workload pressure. In the previous year, exceeding than 7.5 crore returns were filed last year of which nearly 25 to 30 lakh had audit reports mandating the detailed reconciliations.
Adding new reporting, portal slowness, and overlapping GST compliances makes the timeline extremely tight.
Since the compliance burden surges year by year therefore CAs are asking for the ITR filing and tax audits due date extension. In this season, nearly 8 crore returns are expected this season of which nearly 1 crore are audit or intricate reporting cases.
The due date extension permits taxpayers to file accurate data that lessens future litigation and improves the overall efficiency of tax administration.
Extension of ITR Filing Due Date for 2025
The due date for the individuals for AY 2025-26 who are not within audit has been extended to September 15, 2025. July 31 was the previous due date.
Despite increasing pressure from tax professionals and industry bodies, it appears highly unlikely that the September 15 deadline will be extended further, and the department is still urging taxpayers to file promptly.

Earlier, the government provided the ITR due date extensions because of exceptional circumstances. Taxpayers should not wait until the last minute; instead, they should gather their documents and file through the official income tax e-filing portal to avoid penalties and ensure they receive any tax refund credit.
