Since the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India in 2017, the tax ecosystem has undergone significant digital transformation.
As GST completes nine years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as the next major upgrade to the system. Businesses are increasingly looking beyond tax rate changes and embracing technology-driven innovations that can make GST compliance faster, smarter, more accurate, and largely automated.
The Next-Gen GST Reform: Rationalise and Simplify. According to a survey, 89% of respondents support integrating AI-led data processing and reconciliation into the proposed GSTN 2.0. This indicates strong industry backing for using artificial intelligence to facilitate compliance with indirect taxes.
The findings show that businesses are no longer focused solely on lower tax rates or fewer compliance requirements. Instead, they wish for the GST Network (GSTN) to evolve into an intelligent platform that can automate repetitive tasks, determine mismatches in real-time, and reduce the need for manual reconciliation.
AI-enabled systems could assist taxpayers in detecting errors before filing returns, improving data accuracy, and lowering compliance costs.
Advance GST Portal
The survey depicts that companies anticipate GSTN 2.0 to propose much more than a digital filing platform. Respondents sought pre-filled GST returns, intelligent reconciliations, real-time status tracking, and simplified integration with e-way bills, e-invoicing systems, and SEZ portals. These features could remove duplicate data entry, enhance efficiency, and make tax compliance less time-consuming.
Also, businesses desire a more user-friendly portal. Nearly 53% of respondents asked for unified dashboards to handle various compliance operations from a single interface, 42% wanted longer access to historical data, and 34% asked for effective portal performance during filing sessions.
These findings show that businesses can now anticipate GST technology becoming more intuitive and intelligent instead of simply digital.
GST Begins a New Era of Reform
GST proceeded from stabilisation to optimisation. After nearly a decade of implementation, the focus is now on enhancing user experience, reducing compliance burdens, and utilising technologies like AI to streamline tax administration.
The report states that advancements in digital adoption, responsive policymaking, and improved tax administration have established a solid foundation for the next generation of GST reforms.
The technology’s significance is shown in another key finding. Compliance digitalisation has arrived as the most valued benefit of GST, with 69% of respondents determining real-time reporting and data analytics as the tax regime’s biggest benefits.
Large and very large enterprises, which handle intricate tax operations across multiple states, are admired for their digital compliance capabilities.
Technology Alone Cannot Ensure Compliance
While AI remains a significant focus, businesses assume that broader policy reforms are also crucial. A recent survey found that 85% of respondents want clearer interpretations of tax regulations, making this the top priority for GST 2.0.
Companies also called for faster refund processes, more consistent audits, flexible input tax credit usage, and simplified return filing to enhance the ease of doing business.
From the report, it is specified that there is higher confidence in GST since its rollout. 90% of respondents show either a positive or neutral view of the indirect tax regime, while negative sentiment has reduced to less than 1%, showing broad industry acceptance after nine years.
The Next Chapter in GST Reform
With the roadmap preparation for GST 2.0 by policymakers, the survey shows the next major reform cannot involve revising tax slabs but transforming how businesses comply with them.
If AI-driven reconciliation, automated return preparation, and intelligent compliance tools are integrated into GSTN 2.0, India’s tax system can significantly advance towards a future where GST compliance becomes faster, more accurate, and nearly automatic for millions of businesses.
