GST Day 2026: Telangana Chief Justice Calls for an Amnesty Scheme and Online Dispute Resolution Under GST

GST Day 2026: Telangana CJ Calls for GST Amnesty

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Day 2026 was celebrated in Hyderabad to commemorate nine years of the GST regime in India.

Addressing the occasion, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, highlighted the transformative role of GST in reshaping the country’s indirect tax system.

He also recommended several key reforms aimed at enhancing tax administration, improving dispute resolution, and further strengthening the GST framework.

Chief Guest, Justice Singh, addresses the gathering. He stated that GST is a landmark tax reform that has streamlined India’s indirect taxation framework through digitalisation, uniformity and cooperative federalism since its inception on 1 July 2017.

He mentioned that the technology-driven tax system has improved transparency and efficiency, but it has given rise to emerging legal and operational problems, which include disputes over digital notices, Input Tax Credit (ITC) claims, and appeal timelines.

To strengthen the GST framework, Justice Singh proposed several initiatives, including the introduction of amnesty schemes for time-barred appeals, the creation of an online dispute resolution mechanism through the GSTN portal, and the expansion of tax literacy programs.

These measures aim to reduce litigation and promote voluntary compliance. He outlined the importance of cooperation among taxpayers, professionals, and tax authorities to build a transparent and self-reliant economy.

During the event, the Chief Commissioner of Central Tax & Customs for the Hyderabad Zone, Shri Arun Kumar, said that GST has improved tax compliance, digital governance, and the ease of doing business over the past 9 years.

He pointed out that monthly GST collections have more than doubled since 2017, and the taxpayer base has increased from nearly 60 lakh to over 1.65 crore.

He also greeted the operationalisation of the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), specifying that it will expedite the resolution of tax disputes and further improve taxpayer services.
