Online Scam Cases Rise in ITR Season; Rajasthan Police Issues Alert

The cybercrime division of the Rajasthan Police has issued a warning to taxpayers about an increase in online scams as people are busy filing their income tax returns. They want everyone to be cautious and aware of these fraud attempts during this tax season.

The individual has been targeted by the criminals for fake promises of tax refunds, urgent PAN-Aadhaar linking, and profile verification to steal sensitive personal and financial data.

As per the officials, phishing emails, text messages, and phone calls are being used by the fraudsters who claim that a person’s tax refund is pending or their ITR has errors. On the mimic official income tax portal, the victims are asked to tap on links. Such websites collect confidential details, including PAN, Aadhaar numbers, bank account information, login credentials, and one-time passwords (OTPs).

In certain matters, taxpayers get the emails with the attachments disguised as ITR receipts. After downloading, such files can harm devices with malware, allowing hackers to access personal data. The police have seen a rise in bogus refund messages being circulated through WhatsApp and other social media platforms, often through the use of fake logos or QR codes so that it seems genuine.

Citizens are asked to stay alert and perform all tax-related activities only via the official income tax website. Taxpayers must validate email senders, prevent sharing OTPs or account information, and stay away from tapping on unknown links or scanning QR codes from unverified sources.
