The Department of Economic Affairs has informed that meetings to discuss the budget for 2026-27 will start on October 9, 2025, and will last until mid-November. These meetings will help prepare for the upcoming budget plan.
In shaping the Revised Estimates (RE) for FY 2025-26 and the Budget Estimates (BE) for FY 2026-27, the consultations, chaired by the Secretary (Expenditure), will secure a crucial role.
Union Budget Guidelines and Information Submission
The DEA, releasing the official Budget Circular for 2026-27, asked the ministries and departments to file their provisional Statement of Budget Estimates (SBE) in the specified format through the Union Budget Information System (UBIS) by October 3, 2025.
The submitted SBEs will serve as the basis for discussions before the budget. Such meetings shall ease the inputs from distinct ministries, ensuring consistency in expenditure planning and revenue projections.
Integrated Budgeting Strategy
The practice specifies the significance of a coordinated and structured approach in Union Budget formulation, as per the DEA. The motive of the government, by drawing together financial and policy priorities across ministries, is to specify a budget that balances financial discipline with growth imperatives.
Under the Modi 3.0 government, the Union Budget 2026-27, to be presented in February 2026, will be the second full-year budget, and it is anticipated that infrastructure spending, fiscal consolidation, and welfare schemes will be its main projections.
