The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has declared a proposed amendment to the numbering formats of e-way bills and Consolidated E-Way Bills, w.e.f. 1 January 2027. The objective of this change is to expand the available numbering capacity in order to accommodate the growing number of E-Way Bills generated under the GST system.
Due to a significant surge in e-way bill generation, the existing numbering capacity is likely to be exhausted; therefore, the GSTN has proposed increasing the number of digits in both types of document formats. Taxpayers, technology service providers, and businesses that use automated e-way bill systems will need to prepare their applications and systems for the revised formats.
The advisory is stated as:

It is hereby notified that, for the significant volume of E-Way Bills generated, the existing numbering capacity is expected to be exhausted. Therefore, the following revisions in the numbering formats are proposed w.e.f. 1 January 2027.
| Document Type | Existing Format | Proposed Format |
|---|---|---|
| E-Way Bill Number | 12 digits | 14 digits |
| Consolidated E-Way Bill Number | 10 digits | 11 digits |
All stakeholders, including taxpayers, GSPs, ERP/software providers, and API integrators, should make crucial revisions to their applications, APIs, database schemas, and validation rules to accommodate the revised numbering formats.
The upcoming changes will soon be available in the Sandbox environment for testing. Detailed information will be published on the E-Way Bill Portal. Stakeholders are advised to prepare their systems well in advance of January 1, 2027, to ensure a smooth transition and prevent any disruptions to E-Way Bill operations.
