Very Tough To Survive For Handloom Weavers Under GST Raj

Handloom Weavers Under GST

It is apparent that there might be multiple campaigns and schemes running parallelly in the state of Himachal Pradesh to appreciate and motivate the handloom industry to grow and manufacture the product.

But there is this goods and services tax applicability which have made the life of handloom weavers miserable. Earlier there was some ease for the weavers as there was an exemption on their handloom products.

Even the weaver’s minister came out and protested against the government for levying additional taxes on the lower income group of the society. He had warned that this additional tax may wipe out the weaver’s industry soon.

Additionally, the handloom weavers are facing stiff competition from the powerlooms which are in the market for the cheap prices making it tough for the handloom industry to progress in the front of such prices.

The government has levied 5 percent GST on the handloom weaved products of below the price mark of INR 1000 while any product above this INR 1000 mark will attract direct 12 percent GST.

It is to be seen how the government will tackle this protest and would it bring down any compliance for the handloom weavers as they are from the lower income group and it is suggested that the government must provide some sort of relief to them.
