Quoting risks to the confidentiality of government data and documents the Finance Ministry has furnished a directive restricting the officers and staff from utilizing AI tools such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek on office computers.
The Department of Expenditure in a note dated January 29, mentioned that,
“It has been determined that AI tools and AI apps (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek etc.) in office computers and devices pose risks for confidentiality of government data and documents.
It is, therefore, advised that use of AI tools/AI apps in office devices may be strictly avoided. This may be brought to the notice of all employees.”
As per the directive, it warranted the employees to not use the AI application on official devices and is strict.
The same proceeding is within the global concerns over AI-driven data security risks. The countries US, Australia, Italy, and Taiwan due to security threats have already banned China’s DeepSeek on government devices.
DeepSeek, a product of a Chinese startup claims to surpass OpenAI’s ChatGPT and also its is less expensive compared to its rival. However, its quick rise has indeed raised fears over its misuse and data vulnerabilities.
To prevent unauthorized data access governments of some countries are strengthening cybersecurity protocols as AI becomes increasingly integrated into work environments. The finance ministry’s strict compliance shows the rising caution against foreign AI tools in securing sensitive state data.
