For AY 2025–26, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025.
In the notified ITR forms, the CBDT quoted comprehensive structural and content revisions as the cause for extension. The amendment is to ease compliance, improve transparency, and rectify reporting precision.
As per the department, more time is needed for the system development, integration, and testing of e-filing utilities. Also, TDS credits due by May 31 are anticipated to begin reflecting in early June, which, without an extension, can reduce the effective filing window.
The CBDT said that enough time is been allotted for the stakeholders to follow the updated forms and utilities under the extension to streamline the taxpayers’ filing experience.
Separately, a formal notification shall be issued.

With the extension, it is anticipated that it addresses the concerns of the stakeholders and supports in keeping the precision and integrity of the return filing procedure.
