Survey: More Than 40% of Taxpayers Have Not Filed ITR Until Now, Huge Difficulties in I-T Portal

More Than 40% of Taxpayers Have Not Filed ITR for FY 2023-24

As the ITR due date is approaching various troubles on the tax filing portal and issues during the procedure have been encountered by the netizens at the time of filing the ITR. Nearly half the taxpayers have not filed their ITR.

The percentage of assesses who have not filed Income Tax Returns till now is 49% as per the survey.

It was revealed that 33% of the assesses have suffered or are likely to suffer challenges in the process of filing, with as many as 11% admitting that it shall not be feasible for them to finish the process successfully before the last date of 31st July.

Insighting the causes behind these issues, a survey revealed that 16% of taxpayers are struggling to get the needed documents. CAs for 14% of the assesses have notified of facing the issues however the major issue reportedly disturbing as many as 38% of the respondents, is the filing portal itself.

Commonly mentioned issues are login failures, unresponsive pages, timeouts, problems with pre-filled data, and problems in uploading large files. Reports of inconsistent calculations for capital gains and foreign income tax, including non-reflection of filings post-submission are there.

Amidst the clamour and tumult, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA), and other Chartered Accountant organizations have reportedly penned letters to the Income Tax Department seeking swift resolution of these problems.

They have requested the department to acknowledge postponing the deadline for filing income tax returns, as the survey that gathered information from taxpayers in 311 districts recommends setting the new date for mid-to-late August to alleviate the excessive burden on taxpayers.
