Taxpayers’ Association Demands To Bring Petrol Under GST

Petrol & Diesel Under GST

Following the recent hike in petrol prices, Taxpayers’ Association and People For India jointly condemned the Central and State (Andhra Pradesh) government and asked to bring petroleum products under the GST ambit.

The prices of petrol and other petroleum products have frequently increased in the recent years, however, the government is still unwilling to include these products in GST, as these commodities generate major income revenue for both the state and central governments.

M.V. Anjaneyulu, Secretary, Taxpayers’ association, said, “Blaming the frequent increase on fluctuations of world crude-oil price is a lie. By bringing petrol and diesel in the purview of GST, the customer can get petrol for ₹51 per litre and diesel for ₹54 per litre.” He and many experts believe that GST can really improve the situation with petroleum prices in India.

Anjaneyulu further added that the price of crude oil has not gone over $4,000 per barrel in the recent years. Even when the crude barrel price was over $6,000 during the Congress regime, the petrol price was not more than Rs 60 per litre. However, the petrol price is continuously rising ever since the Modi government came.

He also went on blaming the TDP government for slowly hiking State taxes on these petroleum products. V. Sambhi Reddy, Tax Payers Association president, and Tulasi Rao, People For India Vice Chairman, also spoke during the protest.
