Anti Profiteering Provision Under GST is Just Week Ahead

The state screening committee of Anti-Profiteering Provision under the new indirect tax regime is likely to be formed in the coming week. “The public can lodge their complaint along with the bill to the nearest sales tax office, which will in turn hand over the complaint to the state screening committee”, said Finance Minister, T M Thomas Issac.

The minister said that, initially states had been disappointed with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) with various other provisions. He further added, “The GST earnings for July is at least Rs 500 crore less than our expectations. This was the case with all other states”.

Thomas Isaac also guided to the Commercial Tax Department to launch a crackdown on the hotels and restaurants who are imposing GST on and above MRP from the customers. The minister informed to officials, that they must assure that unregistered businesses are not levying the taxes in the new tax regime. Till now, only 3,000-odd restaurants have registered under the GST.

The minister finds out that various hotels which come under the turnover of Rs 75 lakh or below were charging high taxes from the consumers, whereas they were entitled to levy only 5 per cent taxes in the new indirect tax regime.
