States have started preparing for the GST regime ensuring proper training to officials working in the department. Now, they need some tax consultants who will advise them on the working of the goods and services tax (GST) law.

As the center is working on a fast pace to see the GST roll-out happening as per the April deadline, the Punjab government has already started recruiting consultants who will help the government for implementing the new tax reform in the state. This new tax regime will subsume state levies such as sales tax and octroi.

Some sources reveal that the other states will follow the same suit of appointing consultants for the assistance of the administration working under the GST Act.

The Punjab government will be appointing the consultants for a period of 2 years as it believes that the timeline is sufficient to understand the GST and things would go in order after 1-2 years.

The basic task assigned to the consultants is to suggest organisation structure of the department in the GST regime, transition period strategy, planning and checklist before the GST roll-out. IT will be the duty of the consultants to build a communication strategy between administration industry and traders.

Known as the biggest tax reform after the independence, the expectations are high on GST as the reform will subsume cess, VAT, service tax and other local levies, thus creating a single market for the smooth transmission of Goods and services in the nation.

The GST draft rules on the returns, payment and refund have been finalized and the GST council will decide the tax rates by October 20.
