Punjab Makes Intra-State E-way Bill Mandatory from June 1, 2018

Punjab E Way Bill

Starting from 1st June 2018, it will be mandatory for suppliers and transporters performing an intra-state movement of products in Punjab to carry a valid E-way bill.

The requirement of e-way bills for intrastate transport of eligible goods in Punjab, which was earlier postponed by the State government, is now mandatory to all businesses and transporters in Punjab from June 1.

As per the notice issued by the excise and taxation department of the Punjab government, on May 18, trial e-way bills for the intra-state transportation of goods within the state of Punjab can be generated via the e-way bill portal. The government instructed stakeholders to get familiar with the system by generating the e-way bill on a trial basis from the portal before the system is officially implemented next month.

The initial implementation of the e-way bill system for inter-state and intra-state movement of goods was scheduled on April 1, however, it was postponed by the Central Government in response to complaints of technical issues and other concerns as reported by the business community.

Now that the intra-state e-way bill has been officially implemented by most of the Indian States, Punjab government has also decided to adopt the system for the intra-state movement of goods within Punjab from 1st June. The e-way bill will be mandatory for intra-state and interstate transportation of goods with a value above Rs 50,000.

What is E-way bill?

The e-way bill is a transport bill which is generated electronically via the e-way bill portal and used for the movement of goods in India. The e-way bill is required only for the transportation of goods with a value above Rs 50,000 in a single invoice/bill/challan in a vehicle. The bill can be generated by any registered taxpayer, supplier or the transporter, via the e-way bill portal.

A unique e-way bill number (EBN) is associated with each e-way bill. The EBN is available to the respective supplier, transporter and the recipient. The number can be used to identify a particular consignment as well as the details of the parties involved.
