Punjab Govt To Adopt Digital Technology to Stop GST Evasion

In order to strengthen digital tax administration, the state taxation department will adopt the latest software and technological solutions so as to meet the problems of the environment where the businesses are functioning, says Punjab Finance and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.

Cheema, who presided over a review meeting with tax commissioner representatives visiting Telangana to examine its GST administration, claimed that the digital technologies used by the newly established Tax Intelligence Unit (TIU) were helping the tax authorities improve enforcement, broaden the tax base, and close loopholes.

He urged the authorities to seek out new technical options that were specifically designed to meet the needs of the state in order to stop any potential tax evasion, inaccurate reporting, and administrative mistakes.

Meanwhile, the taxation commissioner team shared their experiences regarding the study tour to Telangana and explained the state’s effective initiatives in GST administration.

The team used a PowerPoint presentation to showcase the practices being followed by Telangana, they include an online monitoring system, return compliance, scrutiny of returns, and post-audit of refunds.

They informed the Finance Minister that IIT Hyderabad is helping Telangana with data analytics and the development of IT-based modules for implementing GST administration. Notable attendees at the meeting included Financial Commissioner, Taxation, Vikas Partap, and Taxation Commissioner Kamal Kishore Yadav.
