IT e‑Filing Portal Now Requires Aadhaar OTP to Update Email & Mobile Details

Aadhaar OTP Verification Now Mandatory on IT Portal

The CBDT has made Aadhaar-based OTP verification mandatory for taxpayers who wish to update their email ID or mobile number on the new ITR web 2.0 e-filing portal.

The same updated rules have the motive to avert the unauthorised amendments to the taxpayer profiles. The contact information can only be modified by the rightful account holder. The process is anticipated to lessen the cases of account hijacking or misuse.

The department from 1st July has made the Aadhaar obligatory for new PAN applications. Aadhaar number and complete online OTP verification should be furnished by the applicants. A new PAN shall not be issued without the same.

A taxpayer in a previous time can apply for PAN with the use of other ID proofs like a birth certificate. The same option has now been eliminated.

The taxpayers who had a PAN should link the same with Aadhaar by 31st December 2025. PAN shall become inoperative if unable to perform the same. Rs 1000 fine may be applicable for late linking.

As per the CBDT, the amendment is directed to curb tax evasion and duplicate PAN cards. The goal of reinforcing digital KYC norms of the government has been supported by this.

This effort is to facilitate the tax filing and refund process secure and transparent manner under the government’s “Digital India” push.
