GST Verification Campaign: Be Ready to Pay INR 50K Fine If GSTIN Not Displayed

CBIC Verification Campaign to Check GST Number Display Rule

As per the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), the enrolled businessmen on the GST network portal in Punjab’s Bathinda should show their GST number on their premises and if they do not follow then they need to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. For the GST verification, the CBIC is running the campaign until 15th September and guiding all businessmen to execute the GST number display rule.

The motive of the campaign is to verify the registration of all the registered businessmen in GST and to surge the collection of GST. GST council has classified the district into 9 wards, with nearly 14000 firms. The businessmen need to write their GST number on the main board or wall of their shops.

The Assistance Excise and Taxation Commissioner (AETC) Kapil Jindal has pointed out that traders failing to display their GST number will face a fine of Rs 50,000, with Rs 25,000 imposed by the state government and Rs 25,000 by the Centre. He expressed concern that many businessmen are not adhering to this rule, with some engaging in bogus GST collection from customers.

Important: Many Restaurants in State Cheating Customers with Bogus GST Bills

Restaurant and dhaba owners, with an annual turnover of lower than 50 lakhs, fall under the composite scheme and are not authorized to collect GST. However, it has come to notice that these small restaurants and dhabas are still levying a 5 percent GST on their customers.

The taxation department is committed to taking strict action on this matter, targeting those who do not comply. In this initiative, officials will first focus on businessmen who have claimed excessive input tax credits compared to their sales. Displaying the GST number will enable officers to determine whether the appropriate taxes have been paid by these businesses or not.
