The updated Goods and Services Tax (GST) numbers for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana express a lacklustre scenario for the Telugu states. Both states have shown lower growth rates compared to other southern states as per GST collections in Aug 2024.
Andhra Pradesh, for the first time (excluding pandemic years), exhibited negative (-4%) growth, while Telangana fared slightly better with a growth rate of 4%.
Andhra Pradesh made 3,278 crore in Aug, while it was 3,479 crore in Aug 2023. On the other hand, Telangana raked in 4,393 crore in Aug and 4,569 crore the previous year.
Karnataka displayed a rise of 11% followed by Kerala (9%) and Tamil Nadu (7%). Likewise, India showed an average rise of 10% in August of this year. The rising numbers of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are behind the national average.
As per the officials, the GST revenue numbers were anticipated to rise in the coming months as the new governments in both states were adapting the new policies
Comptroller and Auditor General, Telangana released the numbers recently showing that Telangana collected 14,727 crore in GST revenue by July. It falls 3% short of the former fiscal year’s forecasted GST income by July 29%.
