The first-ever kind of meeting is going to be held between Tax officials from the states as well as the Centre to toss around the matters related to legality, administration, revenue, and implementation under the GST regime. The meeting will continue for the whole day but GST rates will not be a group thinks.
The meeting is labelled as unique because for the first time heads of central and state tax officers will be put together for the measures apart from those highlighted in the Council’s meeting agenda and this is the reason GST rates will not be discussed as that is associated with GST council meeting updates
Contents of the discussion will include methods to increase revenue, anti-evasion measures, GST compliances, and digitalization, keeping into account the contact downfall in revenue under GST. The meeting will provide a common platform to the state level and center level officials to confer upon the modus operandi that will standardize the undetermined issues under indirect tax regime.
According to the officials, the meeting would be more comprehensive and will consider the problems associated with e-way bills, procrastination in return filing, Income Tax, legislative changes in the offing and mechanism for the greater harmony between SGST and CGST in addition to administrative-and implementation-concerned issues.
“This method to have a common platform for discussion between states and Centre is being tried for the first time. The idea was not to club it with a GST Council meeting and have an open agenda meeting. This was felt necessary to develop a mechanism for similar discussions going ahead. The officer-level meetings before Council meetings, otherwise, have too many agenda items and not everything gets discussed in detail,” told by an official.
Several states are yet going outmoded and have not made changes in their respective State GST (SGST) Acts concerning the amendments made in the Central GST (CGST) Act. This is obstructing the uniformity and proper execution of GST laws across the country. The measures to resolve this will also be discussed in the meeting.
