Confusion Cleared! GST Levy on Marriage or Goods & Services

Currently, a post is in the headlines claiming that a sum of Rs 96,000 must be furnished as GST when the marriage budget would Rs 5 lakh. Below is the claim incurred in the post.

Claim: Rs 96,000 ought to be paid as GST (goods and services tax), the marriage budget exceeds Rs 5 lakh.

GST on Marriages in India

There is no rule or law or act that imposes a GST on marriage in India, despite expenses standing equal to or more than Rs 5 lakh. But GST will be incurred for the goods and services for conducting the wedding ceremony. Thus the claim incurred in the post would be deceptive but the people of India are concerning GST’s impact on their businesses related to the wedding ceremony.

GST Rate on Goods and Services Used in Wedding

Goods and Service Description HSN CodeRate of GST
Banquet halls and other related services9963,9971, 9985,996612% – 28%
Venue Decoration9954,996318%
Wedding invitation printing and postal services9968,490918%
Photography/videography, cultural activities9983,999618%
Other services999718%

As the budget, item choices, and decoration of marriages would distinct hence the same would be able to calculate the GST load in the basic terms. In parliament, various bills have been made to stop the extra spending and wastage of food at Indian weddings. But the food gets wasted as seen most of the time.
